Situated in Eastern Europe, Bucharest is the capital and the largest city (2 milion inhabitants) in Romania. The city was first mentioned in officially in xv century and became city capital of Romania in 1859. The city's recent history is marked by the Democratic Revoltion (December 1989) that overthrown Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Nicknamed "little Paris", for its archiectural style, Bucharest lost some of its old buildings during the comunist era. Main city attractions include old downtown (Curtea Veche), University square, the former Royal palace and National Arts Museum, Revolution square, Romanian Atheneum (symphony), the Cotroceni palace (presidential palace), the Arch of Triumph, the Village museum, Herastrau and Cismigiu parks. The Palace of the Parliament was built before 1989 as a presidenial palace. It is now the second largest building in the world after the Pentagon in Washington DC. Traffic is often difficult and rather hectic. The subway is a good transportantion alternative and taxies are cheap. While in Bucharest allow for a visit to famous Peles castle (120km north of Bucharest) and a trip to the Black sea riviera (250km east). Winters in the city are usualy cold (-10C) and Summers are very hot (25C-35C). Best time to vist is May to June or September to October.
