San Francisco (800.000 inhabitants) is located in northern California Pacific coast, and stands as one of the most beautiful cities in USA. The city became increasingly important during the Gold Rush in 1848-1849, and it was later completely destroyed by the catastrophic earthquake of 1906 and the Great
Fire that followed. Main attractions are a visit to Golden Gate bridge, the financial district and Transamerica tower, the Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli square, Lombard street, Coit tower, Union square, Chinatown, little Italy, Golden Gate park, Embarcadero tower, Presidio park. Get a ride in the oldest cable car still in use and take a boat trip on the bay or to Alcatraz Island.
While in San Francisco, visit also Sausalito and Point Reyes driving north on highway one.
Nightlife is concentrated on Mission, Castro and Columbus streets. Traffic is congested at rush hours, but pretty courteous.
Weather is around 55-75F year around but some places in the city are pretty foggy. Always dress in layers since the temperature varies a lot from one area to the other within the city, and don't forget that "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco" (Mark Twain).
